1st Annual Lakeside Emporium Sweetest Day Parade

Posted by Stephanie Benoit on September 23, 2016 at 1:25 PM Comments comments (0)

Dear Alumni,

Thank you so much for your interest in our 1st Annual Lakeside Emporium Sweetest Day Parade. Here are the details:

We are planning a fall celebration week October 10th – 15th (“L.E.A.F” – “Lakeside Emporium Autumn Fest”;), the culmination of which will feature a parade. The purpose of the parade extends beyond entertainment to that of a “harvest” for those in need in the community. In other words, participants are asked to bring food item and/or new or unused winter wear, such as gloves, mittens, scarves, or hats, all for distribution to area food banks and shelters. The items will be transported via the parade route in wagons or carts, etc., by the participants. The hope is that “audience” members will be entertained by musical groups, colorful floats, gorgeous classic cars, & then follow suit, so to speak, and bring their own donations to the parade destination for distribution as well.

The parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th, with a 9:30 am step-off time. It’s short (3 city blocks), but performing groups who are willing to do so are invited to stay and perform at the parade’s conclusion in our parking lot. Our stage will be used to “accept: each group’s donation of food items $/or winter wear, and we will thank and acknowledge each group individually at that time. Non-performing groups will have the opportunity to share information about their group, then, if they choose to do so.

There will be no politicians or political statements, no candy being thrown. It’s just a great. ‘sweet’ opportunity for organizations and individuals to come together to celebrate the fall gravest by giving to those in need. We will have a “host” greet your group at the Grand Trunk Launch Ramp (2090 Lakeshore Drive, at the end of McCracken St.) between 8:30 and 9:00 am that morning, to get everyone lined up, etc. The parade will then begin at 9:30, & will head east down Lakeshore Dr.& will turn into & conclude in our parking lot. The “presentation of donation items” will take place then. (and, of course, the store will be open after the parade, just in case anyone needs a treat!!!)

One of the groups to which we will be donating is Kids’ Food Basket, and I am attaching their “wish list” from their website as a guide. We will also accept traditional canned goods & non-perishable food items for other area food banks in need. As previously stated, if participants would rather do so, they may instead donate new or unused gloves, hats, or scarves for all ages.

I can’t thank you and your group enough for considering participation in this event. If you need more information, let me know. Once you make a final decision, just send me a note or call so we can have as much info on your group and representatives as possible to be able to place them properly in the line-up and acknowledge them appropriately afterword. I will look forward to hearing from you!

Carl Frans

Fellow Big Red Band Alumni:

Former band member, Carl Frans, who played trombone passed away on Tuesday, December 22. Carl graduated somewhere around 1956 or 1957, I'm guessing.

Carl, his wife Anita (oboe), MaryAnn Hartman, Chris Buekema Adams and I kept the alumni band organization going for the first 10 or so years of the organization's history after it was started by Darrell Walters in 1978. This organization was very important to Carl and Anita (well, it was important to all of us).

When I was in high school (I graduated in 1976) Carl had a photography studio across the street from Muskegon High School and took many students senior pictures.

If you are interested, the funeral is Monday, December 28, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church downtown Muskegon.

Wrap That Truck Night!

Posted by Stephanie Benoit on September 16, 2014 at 9:10 AM Comments comments (0)

Alumni,

We have another amazing opportunity for you to get involved and help the Big Red Marching Band in addition to Alumni Night (September 26)!

Last year, the band was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a truck to haul all equipment to band camp and competitions. But, they are still in need of renovating the outside of the truck.

THIS Friday at the football game they will be hosting Wrap That Truck Night!

The band will be collecting money and sending volunteers into the stands to raise money. If everyone in attendance gives just $5, ($25,000 total) the renovation of the trailer can be completed before our last competition. Lets help make the truck look as fantastic as we know they are!

Tell your friends and make sure you go out to support the band by giving volunteers any money you can at the football game on Friday!

Help our kids look fantastic!

*Can't make it to the game? Give online and share the link with your friends and former classmates! http://www.gofundme.com/6augao

Remember Alumni Night is in 2 weeks, September 26! See you then!

I challenge all Big Red Band Alumni, whether it be my former students, fellow classmates, or those who came before me to support this worthy project. It is a visual symbol of excellence and how special this organization really is. If 279 other Big Red Band Alumni match my $100 donation, this dream will become a reality. Let's continue to keep the tradition alive!
